Free water imaging (or free water correction, as it’s alternatively referred to) is a post-processing technique that you can apply to an already well-established type of scan called a diffusion MRI.

Diffusion MR sequences have led to hundreds of journal publications in conditions like Alzheimer’s, because they can reveal numerous interesting properties of the tissue that you can’t easily see with other types of structural scan.
